  • Rape and Slaughter in the Congo

This is the kind of thing that just makes me despair for humanity. What kind of people can systematically rape and kill children? How can anyone justify anything like this as a political tool? I’ve read many times how soldiers lose their perspective, and stop seeing people as human beings, but it’s just impossible to understand.

I once had an intimate experience with this mentality. I was in an so-called “honors” history class in high school, and one of our assignments was to interview a WWII veteran. I talked with a member of our church that served in the South Pacific theatre. He still held a huge grudge against the Japanese, and told me quite dispassionately about burning the “Japs” out of their tunnels using a flamethrower. He really didn’t view them as quite human.

Estimates are that 1000 people a day are dying in East Congo from war, famine, and disease – over four million in the last 10 years! Now, if I were President, this would be the sort of thing that would be of importance to me. My goal as a world citizen would be to make this tiny sphere a more prosperous and livable place for all, not just for a select few.

Is that too Miss Universe/SaveTheWhales/Whirled-Peas sounding? Call me a romantic, a dreamer, a rebel, Dottie…a loner. But this just happens to be a bit more important to me than cheap oil, missile defense systems, and lowering my taxes.

Some additional info about how UN peacekeeping forces are contributing to this horror.

  • Extra, Extra! Get yer blog noticed here!

One of the challenges for beginning bloggers is getting your site noticed. Your blog is just a small collection of bits in the incalculable bitstream of this planet’s electronic traffic. Not to make you feel insignificant or anything. Just trying to be honest here.

So if you want folks to find you, you must be proactive. Here’s a nice collection of tips on moving from obscurity to ‘Net stardom.

  • Conflicted

Man, I have trouble with this! I’m not a huge TV watcher, but there are a couple of shows that I dig. I don’t have the luxury of setting my schedule to see them when they’re initially on, but I do have the luxury of having a DVR that lets me time-shift things. The things that I usually have on the hard drive are:

    • Gophers hockey
    • Malcolm in the Middle
    • 24
    • Arrested Development (Alas! No more.)
    • The Simpsons

Now, notice any correlation? They’re all on the <insert unmentionable> Fox channel! Even the Gophers are on Fox Sports! Talk about internal conflict! The most right-wing, unpatriotic, fractious, slimy network in the world, and that’s whose shows I’m watching! Which is very interesting.

Now, if we were to rank these in order from liberal to conservative, we’d have The Simpsons and Arrested Development at the left, Malcolm and Gophers in the middle, and 24 towards the right (this Dem still likes his action flicks). Now, I’m definitely not going to call Fox “Fair and Balanced”, but I’m amazed that they broadcast some of this stuff on their network. Some folks claim that The Simpsons has a contract negotiated that prohibits executive interference in their scriptwriting. Perhaps that’s true. The episode I just watched tonight (from a week or two ago) was centered on gay marriage. Fox was pathetic enough to run a disclaimer prior to the show (“The following episode deals with gay marriage. Parental guidance may be appropriate.”) Now, they don’t need disclaimers to show any of their trash reality shows centered on sex, or for any of their trash biased reporting, or for any of the violent content portrayed daily, but they feel threatened enough to put up a disclaimer on a show about gay unions? As Bugs Bunny would say, “What a (bunch of) maroon(s)!” But they did run it. And I’ve got to believe that this episode would have most of the abortion-clinic-bombing/Creationist-teaching/wife-beating/gun-toting/racist/Bush-voting dumbasses foaming at the mouth.

So maybe I can resolve my inner turmoil by believing that there are some good gals (and guys) working on the inside at Fox. Sort of like the French Resistance.

  • The Violent Prudes

No, it’s not a new band. Although it is kind of a cool name…if you didn’t get sued by the Femmes for infringing on their trademark. No, it’s really a description of the good ol’ U.S. of A.

Man, we love nothing better here than seeing someone blown away (remember how we laughed when Marvin got his head blown off in the back seat in Pulp Fiction?) But God forbid if we show someone naked! Faux News is a prime example of this mentality. Love the war shots. Love the criminal cases (remember Scott & Laci Peterson?). And really love to jump on the (in their words) “moral” bandwagon when we see Janet Jackson’s nipple.

How stupid is that? I’d much rather my children see some naked people on TV than watch Freddie Krueger, or Blade 2, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre 7, or the 10:00 news, or…

I mean, take a look at other folks around the world where nudity is much more commonly accepted. I don’t see a moral decline or disintegration of society in South America, Scandinavian countries, the Caribbean, or basically all of Europe where nudity is an ordinary part of society. Why are we so hung up on the human body, but okay with guns/violence/death?

I really think it has to do with maturation. Just as people mature at different rates, and some not at all, I think that countries have different levels of maturation as well. We’re still relatively new kids on the block. Europe went through its Holy Wars and feudal periods and Spanish Inquisitions and got all that out of its system a few hundred years ago. Oh, sure, they still have a big war every now and then, and there are some terrorists running about, but at least not every friggin’ psychotic in the continent is running around fully weaponized and whining about having their Second Amendment rights infringed.

The U.S. is still like a teenager who’s just received his driver’s license. Thinks he knows everything, thinks he’s untouchable, thinks he’s got the world by the tail…but he’s an accident waiting to happen. Statistically provable. Especially when he’s driving a big ol’ fuel-guzzlin’, road-hoggin’ SUV and not bothering to watch out for other cars…or nations.

  • We’re no different than they are…

We’re gawddamn ‘mericans! We’re superior in every way to all them rice-eatin’, turban-wearin’, pinko-commie, slant-eyed, drum-bangin’, loincloth-clad, non-Christian bastards, ain’t we? Not really. Reichsführer Bush and his minion keep moving us closer and closer to the very things they think they’re fighting against:

    • Increasing infiltration of the administration with right-wing religious fanatics (Ashcroft was a prime example) makes our government look more and more like Middle-Eastern countries led by religious figures: intolerant, oppressive, close-minded, and dangerous
    • Growing centralization of media outlets and government control of news (especially regarding the war-that-isn’t-a-war) moves us closer to state-run TV/radio as in the “Axis of Evil” countries
    • Ever-increasing divide between the haves and have-nots causes growing tension, discord, and lack of unity as a nation
    • Government-sponsored and promoted religious dogma (anti-abortion laws, discrimination against homosexuals, prayer in schools (but only to the right God), promotion of religious icons (e.g. 10 Commandments), teaching creationism) turns our citizens against each other and the world

What I’m trying to say is that every day we look more and more like the rabid fundamentalists of which we’re most afraid! Besides surface factors like skin color and dress, you can’t tell the difference between Karim in Fallujah and Jim in Kansas City. Both can’t use logic, and refuse to even entertain the possibility that their God might be the same God that the other guy prays to. Both think the other a barbarian. Both have such limited mental facilities that empathy is beyond them, and the death and suffering of people in another country is cause for joy to them. Both interpret their religious texts to suit their purposes, and conveniently overlook the parts that decry their actions. Both are as far separated from God and God’s purposes as heaven and hell (or at least as far as they would be if you were into a literal interpretation of those realms. I personally think the Constantine theological view is pretty simplistic, even though I am just a simple cave-man.)

  • Burn, Canucks, Burn!

OMG! The Canadiens have decided not to be part of the U.S. anti-missile system. What’s wrong with them, eh?! Don’t they know that Fiji, Antarctica, and the Outer Hebrides could be raining nukes down on us at any second? We have to prepare! After all, why shouldn’t we spend $200 billion+ on a system that:

    1. makes no sense
    2. doesn’t work and can statistically never fully work (sure, so you knock down 3 out of every 4…I guess it’s just tough cookies for Houston)
    3. is so anachronistic in thinking as to be laughable, if it weren’t so damn scary.

Where is the voice of reason in this country? Oh, I forgot. It was silenced under the New Nazi Patriot Act…

  • Question of the Day

Can one who truly desires to serve the public become a politician, or can one only be elected if said person has a strong predisposition towards self-aggrandizement?

This, I think, is the main flaw with our system (and perhaps most systems) of government. It seems that you are almost required to be a shameless self-promoter in order to be elected. But that is not a trait I want in my elected official. I want a person who puts her constituency ahead of her own personal desires for fame/fortune/re-election/what-have-you. A person that truly wants to make things better for people. Is that too much to ask?

  • Only you can prevent morons…

It’s just incredible that a single moronTerrorist can bring an entire planet to the edge of ruin. And it’s almost as incredible that 60,608,582 people can be so stupid as to hasten the world to the brink of destruction by voting for this clown. That’s old news, but it’s just eating away at me.

It’s like a re-run of WWII. Demented sociopath uses racism and heavily-edited bubblegum “Christianity” in conjunction with growing economic crisis to engender fear, erode civil liberties and build military junta to control nation and eventually Die Welt.

I keep hoping I’m Dorothy and that I’ll soon wake to find Scarecrow leaning in the window, but I don’t think it’s gonna happen. We’ve got to band together to drive this idiot back to Texas (or preferably prison, where he can have his rights violated along with all the minorities, illegal detainees, Afghanis, and those without rights under the Geneva Convention, thank you very little Unterführer Alberto Gonzales). It’s time the American public wakes up and really sees what’s going on. And please don’t snap off something like, “Liberal $&*^!” I don’t think you can view the facts objectively and argue.

Lest this seem like a left-wing rant list, I’ll come back and add links to support my premise. Although I can’t believe anyone with an open mind can fail to see the slippery slope down which we’re sliding.

All right, enough already. I’ll try and pen something happier or at least offbeat next time. I’m not all doom and gloom. Well, not all the time…

  • And here I thought I was a techie…

Boy, this sucks! Here am I, a 17+ year IT veteran, and I can’t even get a simple blog going! It would help if I read the directions…Mom always told me to do that when all else failed. For some reason the &*$*!+ comments aren’t being allowed! Good thing that no one is looking!

    Later…

After mucho searching, gnashing of teeth, and wailing, I had an “a-ha!” experience and solved my little problem: You don’t want to have an index.html file in the same home directory as index.php — just trust me on this one. The .html version takes over and sabotages the .php. Go ahead, say, Duh! if you want. I can handle it.

  • Ve still vant zat money, Lebowski!

So, like, welcome to the blog, eh? It’s obviously not anywhere near complete yet, but a guy’s got to start somewhere! So the operative word(s) is baby-steps.
